Yoga teacher training not only offers a path to an engaging and rewarding career. It also gives you the opportunity to learn more about yourself and your abilities. The Vancouver School of Healing Arts has over 15 years of experience in helping students become accomplished yoga teachers. Students develop a deep understanding of the spiritual and physical aspects of yoga through intensive practice led by our renowned yoga teachers.
But before embarking on this journey, it’s a good idea to prepare yourself physically and mentally so that you’re able to get the most out of your training. If you’re ready to turn your passion for yoga into a career, here are some things you can do to get prepared for your training!
1. Embrace an Open Attitude
As a practice, yoga is about listening to the mind and body and adapting to the needs of the individual. In that case, a good yoga teacher is one that respects our internal cues and understands that our moods and abilities change. At VSOHA, our alignment-based Hatha Vinyasa training will help students adapt their teaching to a variety of environments, demographics and styles. Students develop the skills to modify their instruction to suit beginners or intermediate clients utilizing various styles, including Hatha, power or flow.
Keep in mind that there is no one right way to do yoga; yoga is about exploration more than results. This is a good mentality to adopt as you enter yoga teacher training school. There may be words, postures or topics that you have never encountered before and may not understand. Take the time to be curious, make mistakes and ask questions.
2. Create a Schedule that Works for You
Organizing your time is a practical step you can take to prepare yourself for the commitment of yoga teacher training. This will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed when classes start and strike a healthy balance with your personal obligations.
VSOHA offers a unique 12-week certification program where students study just two evenings per week online and attend in-person classes either 1 or 1.5 days each weekend. This allows students to work part-time or pursue other goals while they are gaining their certification.
3. Look After Your Own Body
In your yoga teacher career, you’ll not only help others to improve their abilities, awareness and experience of their body, but you’ll also develop healthy practices that you can apply to your own life. This begins in your training.
Yoga teacher training courses involve a mixture of poses, stretches and physical exercises. Attending yoga classes and practicing regularly can help to prepare your body for more intensive instruction and ensure you’re in the proper physical condition to progress. At the same time, listen to your body when starting out. Remember that everyone starts somewhere and understanding your body’s limits will prevent you from imposing unnecessary strain on yourself.
4. Know What to Expect from Your Yoga Teacher Training Program
While it’s essential to go into your training with an open mind, it’s also helpful to have an idea of what to expect. Take some time to go over the modules, goals and philosophy of your program to get a better feel for the experience and step into your training with confidence. At VSOHA, our hybrid program offers up-to-date learning technologies and personalized coaching, melding yoga’s rich history and tradition with an evidence-based, modern scientific understanding of the body/mind connection.
Additionally, we also offer interest-free payment options, and our program qualifies eligible students to receive provincial and Canadian student loans. By ironing out the practical details of your training and adapting your mindset to the goals of the program, you can set yourself on the path to becoming an informed and confident yoga teacher.
